EIA weekly data shows how crude and product stocks can move on different tracks

EIA’s weekly update for the week ending 17 July reported a crude-stock increase alongside different movements in gasoline, distillate and propane/propylene inventories. The release is a timely reminder that aggregate stock totals do not describe every product system in the same way.
The reported weekly movement
EIA said commercial crude oil inventories, excluding the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, rose by 2.0 million barrels to 411.7 million barrels for the reported week. It also reported increases in gasoline, distillate and propane/propylene stocks, with total commercial petroleum inventories up 11.6 million barrels. The figures are national weekly estimates and should not be treated as a measure of storage capacity or availability at any individual terminal.
Why product separation matters
Crude, gasoline, middle distillates and propane do not share the same supply chains, storage arrangements or release patterns. A crude build may coincide with a product draw in another period; a product build can also reflect refinery output, import timing, seasonal demand or pipeline movements. Reading the categories separately is more useful for physical logistics than treating a single total as a universal signal.
Limits of a weekly data point
Weekly estimates can be revised and describe a defined reporting period. They do not reveal tank compatibility, berth schedules, custody-transfer arrangements or customer commitments. Logistics planning therefore needs current operational discussion in addition to public market data.
Why this matters for storage and logistics
Inventory data can sharpen planning context, but it does not substitute for a cargo-specific terminal discussion. Product category, quantity, dates and the proposed receipt and delivery methods remain the essential starting points.
